What Is Cupping?
Cupping is an alternative bodywork treatment used by acupuncturists that helps to release muscle and fascial tension in the body. Cups are applied to the target area via a vacuum either created by heat (fire cupping) or a mechanical pump. The target area of the skin is gently drawn into the cup, helping to circulate stagnant blood and fluids to the surface of the skin. A single treatment can result in multiple cups placed on the body in the treatment areas. The cups are left between 10 to 20 minutes.
“Cupping marks” can be a side effect of the cupping treatment – made well-known by the Olympic swim team and Michael Phelps in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Cupping can greatly relieve sore, overused and injured muscles. Patients report feeling increased relaxation and pain relief from cupping treatment.
